Tina Dickow

Goldhawk Road

Oh, to belong
Such a gift

I’m rarely surprised when songs long forgotten suddenly come to mind when certain feelings bubble up.

This has been a tough week. I’ve been watching my significant other struggle with the reality of losing a safe space she has always assumed would be there.

Losing hope is never easy. It hurts.

My love, will you be there
The morning my ship comes in
I can only hope

Tina Dico (née Dickow) might be most renowned for her vocals in the Zero 7 album When It Falls. She’s certainly part of an unforgettable live performance of her song The Space Between.

When PledgeMusic (think KickStarter for musicians) was gaining steam, Tina put up her soundtrack album Road to Gävle there. She was the most famous artist on the platform at the time, and I remember it helping PledgeMusic attract more talent.

Receiving a signed album from The Tina Dickow was a big deal for me. The album being Road to Gävle is even more significant—emotional, and personal.

Whenever I feel sad enough to remember and listen to Goldhawk Road, I try to follow up with Private Party.

It’s from the same album, and sings light like a summer breeze, with a fun and tender melody.

The whole songs fills me with hope. Especially the way the instruments follow each other feel like friends joining in on a conversation or activity.

My favorite part is when the horns start at the bridge, but the chorus comes back up again before waiting for them to subdue, forming an eager harmony—feels like it’s saying “you’re welcome here.”
