When I started writing about The Zutons, I struggled to find the right song to share.
Because you see, my favorite doesn’t belong to them anymore.
As I was writing about it, laptop at hand and Little Voice playing in the background on the TV, Valerie came on. And I went “Oh cool, Amy Winehouse.”
As I was LITERRALY typing how the song was actually by The friggin Zutons!
Apparently not.
The Zutons is a beautiful band with amazing guitars and basslines, made extraordinary by unusal saxophone tracks and very unusual music videos.
This song is about hangovers, and the video starts with hungover band members, struggling to start the song. Sean is disgusted by his own drumming, Abi cannot even pick up her saxophone, and Dave gets a headache from his own voice!
The rest of the video features talking sandwiches and tracks that run through walls—and in one instance, through someones picnic.
The way this song accurately portrays a hangover, both in music and the video, is fascinating to me.
I remember listening to songs from this album during late-night walks around the unlit parts of my university campus. I loved immersing myself in the songs, dissecting the melodies, and fantasizing about playing them with my band. One of those songs.
I think it came easy, looking up to them, because when they weren’t busy imitating West Side Story for a video, they were busy shredding on stage, apparently.
