Pinhani

There was a short period of time when bands were either MySpace-famous, or traditionally published and totally oblivious to social media. The current marketing-focused band representation wasn’t there—some saw it coming, most didn’t.

Those who saw it were also divided into two factions: malicious impersonators, and benevolent helpers. I was in the second one for Pinhani, a Turkish band that had popped up and became famous overnight.

I realized that the name was available on MySpace, they had no official page there, so I tried my best to create an official-looking page, added their videos as they’re launched, moderated fan requests and comments, and kept it updated with previews of songs, with links to buy the albums.

When I got to meet the band at a concert, I told them what I’d done and how I would like to transfer it over to them now. They were truly appreciative of the effort and were gracious for the way I kept it going. I was happy that they were happy.

Most songs have spoken lyrics, all songs have instrumental melodies. I feel like, some songs actually speak through instruments—they’re not in their lane, providing the base for the song, but are actually dueting with the singer.

It’s a funny feeling—kind of like when your dog is trying to tell you something. You hear them, you may even understand what they’re trying to say, but they’re not using words or their usual barking/howling sounds—they’ve found a middleground.

There are a bunch of songs that feel this way for me. This is one of them. The end part feels to me like a couple fighting. I love the jazz-adjacent licks and rhythms on their own, but it truly sounds like I’m listening in on a heated conversation.

I haven’t kept up with the band, the newer albums they released—but I do know that they’re still recording and performing, and the lead singer is even writing songs for established singers. Longevity is hard in the industry, especially for this kind of music, so I’m happy that they’re still creating.
