Halflight

Pick Me

Pick Me is another song that has a hauntingly beautiful guitar-and-vocal match that gets intertwined in a beautiful harmony and rhythm that makes one get lost in it and not hear where vocals and instruments begin.

But this is one of many gems in the few EPs and albums that Sarah Howells, and her then-partner Rich Llewellyn recorded and released.

I remember the day I heard Sarah’s voice for the first time. Somehow, that day, I had decided to take my PowerBook G4 to the living room, and sit with my mom. She used to watch a lot of Hallmark Channel at that time, and this promo came on with this beautiful song.

This song was never “released” with the band. But somehow, someone knew who they were. This was way before Shazam, so this answer was the only way for me to find out who they were.

I was instantly hooked. I bought anything they had. Albums they had sold out, I simply asked for a burned copy. Sarah and Richard delivered.

I never could’ve imagined they’d be the band for me.

I mentioned Sarah before—she was part of Jylt. Halflight is the band she created after Jylt. I discovered Jylt after Halflight, but the influences are clearly audible.

The name Halflight was relatively short-lived. Then came Paper Aeroplanes—more on that next week.
